Introduction
It has proposed a novel synthesis pathway whereby a solar thermochemical looping technology produces and stores nitrogen from air in order to produce ammonia. The first is to decarbonize production of hydrogen, one of the main ingredients in ammonia synthesis. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc. Ammonia has advantages over hydrogen, such as higher volumetric energy density (12. 7 MJ L-1) and simpler storage requirements (readily liquefied at ~10 bar or −33 °C).
